BUSTER AND WHISKERS

With Easter approaching, it’s normal to wonder: Can dogs eat Easter eggs?

Before we talk about this subject, it is important to mention that not all foods that we humans consume are suitable for dogs. Your dog’s organs are different from yours, and that’s why some foods you usually consume on a daily basis are healthy for you, but can be toxic for your pup.

Chocolate Easter eggs are just one example of foods that dogs CAN’T eat. Read the article below to discover the reasons why your dog can’t eat Easter chocolates, and tips on what to do if he accidentally ingests them.

Can dogs eat Easter eggs?

Dogs can’t eat chocolate Easter eggs, or any other Easter chocolates, as these foods contain substances that are extremely toxic to dogs, such as theobromine and caffeine. When ingested in certain amounts, these substances can cause serious health problems for your dog, such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of muscle control, convulsions, or even death.

If you notice that your pup has ingested a considerable amount of Easter chocolates, you should immediately seek veterinary advice, especially if your dog already has a pre-existing medical condition. Your Veterinarian will guide you to act safely and accordingly.

It is recommended that you keep all Easter chocolates away from your pup to ensure his safety. If you plan ahead of time, you can buy your pup special Easter treats made with safe ingredients for him. You just need to do your research and plan ahead of time.

What are chocolate Easter Eggs made of?

Regardless of the type of chocolate, they all contain two substances that are extremely toxic to dogs: theobromine and caffeine.

Theobromine

Theobromine is an extremely toxic substance for dogs, as it affects the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, and respiratory system. The considered lethal dose of this toxin is 100-500 mg/kg body weight in dogs.

This substance is also present in plant leaves for tea, coffee, and kola nuts. You should also be careful with these foods and derivatives.

Caffeine

Caffeine is also bad for dogs as it can affect your pup’s nervous system, urinary system, and cardiovascular system. When ingesting caffeine, a dog can have convulsions, or even die due to an accelerated heartbeat.
