Start at a distance with a good amount of space between you, and walk parallel to one another. Once the dogs seem calm, you can get closer and allow them to sniff one another. Sniffing the other dog is a critical part of the meet and greet. It allows your dog to gain valuable information about the other dog. You do not need to be embarrassed about your dog sniffing the other dog’s behind. This is a natural part of the socialization process.  

Keep the interactions only long enough for the dogs to get acquainted and have a neutral experience. Each progressive interaction can get longer and longer. Be sure to look for any signs of discomfort or stress in your dog. Ideally, you will end the interaction before your dog starts to show any signs of stress. 

If your dog does growl or display any sign of fear, it is important for you to remain calm. Remove your dog a safe distance away from the situation, and let them decompress. If your pup is able to calm down quickly, you can try exposing your dog to the other dog again. It may be best to end the session for the day and try again tomorrow if your dog is taking a while to decompress.
