Kennel Cough, also known as Canine Cough, or Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis if we’re getting really technical here, is an upper respiratory infection in dogs that affects the dog’s lungs, windpipe, and voice box. In addition, you can help comfort your pup by keeping them in a well-humified area. A veterinarian may prescribe antibiotics to prevent a secondary infection, speed up the recovery time, or to minimize and ease the symptoms of Kennel Cough during the course of the infection. If your pooch’s cough seems to be causing them emotional or physical trauma, cough medicines can be used to ease the symptoms.
Is Kennel Cough Preventable with the Bordetella Vaccine?
Usually, dogs who are exposed to large amounts of other canines are more likely to contract Kennel Cough. Places like dog parks, doggie daycares, training groups, dog shows, and boarding facilities are common breeding grounds for the harmful bacteria that cause the illness. Dogs can spread it to one another through contact, like touching noses, or sharing their water and food bowls. It is wise to avoid public doggy water bowls outside shops, cafes, and restaurants, where the bacteria may be hiding.
When Should My Dog Get a Bordetella Vaccine?
Healthy adult dogs that come into contact with large groups of other dogs should have a Bordetella vaccine once every year.
