BUSTER AND WHISKERS

If you’re thinking about becoming a dog owner, you should consider dog training.  In particular, which breeds are known to be more difficult to train. Different breeds of dogs were bred to have varying characteristics. Some breeds of dogs are more stubborn, less motivated by external rewards, and just not as eager to learn. If you want to succeed in your dog training, taking into account how easy the breed is to train is important. It is definitely more challenging to train certain dog breeds, but not impossible if you put in the time and effort. Here are the 5 hardest breeds for dog training and how to effectively train them:

The American Pit Bull Terrier

American Pit Bull Terriers are loyal, friendly, and loving dogs, but can be quite temperamental at the same time. Their strength is something they themselves are not quite aware of. This makes it difficult to teach them to be gentle. Therefore, dog training is more effective when you socialize your American Pit Bull Terriers as young as possible, starting around 8 weeks of age, with young children and people of all ages is imperative.  With patience, time, and consistency during training, the American Pit Bull Terrier will make a great family dog.

The Beagle

The Beagle has a great sense of smell. Traditionally, hunters used Beagles to track prey.  Because of this, when it comes to dog training, it can be challenging to teach them, since they may not follow instructions or listen to commands. They love to bark, which can be a problem if you live in an apartment. They are a high energy breed which requires you to provide them with daily exercise. When training a Beagle, you must be consistent and provide continuous, short training sessions throughout the day.  You should not limit a Beagle puppy to only one daily training session. This will ensure your Beagle remains mentally and physically stimulated. Their eagerness to please their owner and strong sense of smell can make training sessions fun. Using praise and treats will provide the positive reinforcement he wants and loves during training.

The Bulldog

Bulldogs are a loving, yet stubborn dog breed to train. Originally, they were used to control and guard bulls. Because they are not good listeners,  training them can be challenging. Training should include socializing them with other dogs and animals starting at a very young age. They are very affectionate towards children if properly socialized as a puppy. Attention is something they love. With patience and the proper training, Bulldogs make great family pets.

The Chow Chow

The Chow Chow is a breed that can be stubborn and quite temperamental. They crave attention, which can make them easily jealous. They also like being in charge due to their dominant nature. Training a Chow Chow requires the trainer to be dominant, firm, and consistent. You will need someone with strong leadership skills to train your Chow Chow. Positive reinforcement is the best method to train this breed. Without the proper training, the Chow Chow can show behavioral issues and aggressive tendencies.

The Basset Hound

Basset Hounds can be a difficult breed to housebreak. Originally, they were bred to be used as scent hounds.  Basset Hounds are known to ignore your command if they are focused on smelling something. Basset Hounds enjoy howling, barking, and digging around the neighborhood. Positive reinforcement works best with them. Basset Hounds love to play and receive treats as rewards. They need owners who are patient and affectionate towards them.

When you decide to bring a new dog into your home, it is best to be aware of what challenges likely lie ahead.  Some breeds are easily distracted by their strong sense of smell, which can make training challenging. Other breeds are known for their stubbornness and jealousy.  If you are aware of the breed’s tendencies, it makes it easier to effectively train them. A properly trained and well balanced dog of any breed will make a great family pet.  You can reach out to a professional Dog Trainer if tackling training on your own is overwhelming. For all breeds, the earlier training starts, the better.
