BUSTER AND WHISKERS

Parks are a great spot for dogs to get exercise and enjoy some fresh air. Dog friendly parks contain specialized amenities and engaging features dedicated to your dog. Your pup will get the opportunity to socialize and make the most of the space these parks have to offer.

When going to a park your dog must be kept on a leash. Some parks allow him to be off-leash altogether, while other parks restrict this to certain times. Here are 6 dog friendly parks in NYC where you can take your dog:

1.  Chelsea Waterside Park

Chelsea Waterside Park is located on 11th Avenue and West 23rd Street in Chelsea. This park has a great dog walking area and contains a dog run administered by the Hudson River Park Trust. This very dog friendly park is a great choice for dog owners who work long hours.  The park opens at 6 am and remains open until 1 am, everyday throughout the year.

The park is clean and well maintained. There are benches for visitors to sit on and structures for the dogs to climb on. It’s especially great in the summer because the park stays cool, even when the weather outside is hot.

2. Dog Friendly areas in Central Park

Central Park is enormous. Thousands of dogs and dog owners visit this park everyday. Because there are so many dogs, it’s a great place for both you and your dog to socialize. Your dog can run off-leash before 9 am and after 9 pm. If you’re visiting outside these hours, you need to ensure that your dog is leashed up.

There are 13 dog fountains throughout the park. While there are no dog runs, there are 23 dog friendly areas scattered throughout the Park. The Central Park Conservancy has published a nifty guide for dog owners. A Dog Owner’s Guide to Central Park lists the do’s and don’ts when visiting the park with your dog. The guide also has a map with detailed information on the dog friendly areas.

3. Sirius Dog Run

Sirius Dog Run is a lovely dog run located along the Hudson River in Battery Park. The dog run is named in honor of Sirius, a Port Authority and NJPD Service Dog. Sirius was an Explosive Detection Dog who fought tirelessly and sacrificed his life during the rescue efforts of 9/11.

The run is a great place to take your dog during summers. The dog friendly park stays cool due to the many trees and there are shaded benches for you to sit down. There is a wading pool to help your dog cool off. The pool runs on a timer that automatically fills up and empties the swimming area at regular intervals.

4. Madison Square Dog Park Run

Madison Square Dog Park Run is a small, yet decent sized dog friendly park. The dog run is open from 6 am – 11 pm and offers great views of Madison Square Park. The park contains a pebbled surface and offers free poop bags in case your dog poops while there.

There is a designated area for small dogs as well. Madison Square Park has a Shake Shack that serves a doggie dessert called Pooch-ini. You can take your dog after a run in the summer and treat him to a Pooch-ini or ShackBurger dog biscuits.

5. Tompkins Square Dog Run

Tompkins Square Dog Run is NYC’s first Dog Run, opened in 1990.  It is also one of the biggest dog runs in NYC. It is located in Tompkins Square Park between Avenue A and Avenue B.  The dog run is open everyday from 6 am – 12 am.

Like Madison Square Park, Tompkins Square Dog Run features an area for small dogs under 20 pounds. All other dogs play in a separate, larger area. The park also contains benches, trees for shade, and pools for you and your pup to enjoy.

6. Washington Square Dog Run

Washington Square Dog Run, also known as George’s Dog Run, is located in Greenwich Village. This beautiful park is well-maintained and has seating all around the dog run. The park offers free poop bags and is surrounded by trees and shaded park benches.

The park features a run for smaller dogs called The Robin Kovary Run for Small Dogs. This run is built for dogs weighing under 25 pounds. Large dogs over 25 pounds have a separate run. Both dog runs feature small circular water spouters which can be used to start a flow of water. This is great in summer to help your dog drink from and get wet.

Parks are the perfect place for you and your dog to enjoy time together outside. Visit https://www.thedublinpainters.ie. No matter where you live in NYC, pet friendly parks can be found throughout all five boroughs. While visiting, it is important to abide by all the rules and to clean up after your dog.
