The Summer is the perfect time to take your pup for a walk and enjoy the great outdoors. But do you know what the best time of day is to walk your dog in the summer?
Many people believe that they can go out with their dogs at any time of the day during the summer. However, as it is a season of the year marked by high temperatures, it is recommended to plan the walks to take place at cooler times of the day.
We share some tips below that will help you get the information you need to walk your dog safely in the summer time. We hope you enjoy!
What is the best time of day to walk your dog in the summer?
Mornings are great for taking longer walks with your dog during the summer. Ideally, walks should be at least 1 hour long to ensure that your pup expends excess energy at the beginning of the day. Walking the dog in the morning is an excellent option to avoid distractions during the walk, as you will find fewer people on the streets.
The night time is also suitable for walking your dog, as it is usually quieter and cooler. Also, doing activities at night can help your pup sleep better.

Tips to enjoy the summer with your dog:
It is recommended that you apply sunscreen intended for dogs to areas exposed to the sun. This includes the tips of the ears and nose. This is especially true if your dog has a white coat, as they are more likely to get sunburned.
Always have access to shade and fresh water so your dog can cool off while walking. When you get home, you can put ice cubes in the water bowl. Or make food popsicles to keep your dog hydrated and well fed.
There are dogs that love to swim in pools and lakes. In the summer time, this can be a great idea for your pup to have fun and cool off on hot days. If your house has a yard, try connecting the hose or getting a kiddie pool for your dog to play.
Before leaving the house for a walk with your pup, check the temperature at that moment. If it extremely hot, it may be wise to go for just a quick bathroom relief walk. And save the longer walk for later in the day.

Structured Group Walks during the Summer Time
Here at Buster and Whiskers, we take precautions during the summer time. During extreme temperatures, we cut walks short. We bring foldable doggy bowls and water bottles with us, and give the dogs multiple water breaks. We also sometimes wet the dogs during the walk to cool them off if needed. In addition, we always walk on the shaded side of the street and at a slower pace. It is recommended that if your dog has a thick coat of fur, such as a Shiba Inu, you remove their thick winter coat. Our favorite way to do this is to use a furminator multiple times per week for a few consecutive weeks. During the summer time, your dog can still benefit from Structured Group Walks while staying safe.
