Do you know how to train a dog to roll over?

Dogs are very cute animals. We can’t deny that. It’s impossible not to fall in love with them, especially when they do fun tricks like rolling on the floor, pawing, or waving.

In addition to being cute and fun, these tricks can help to further stimulate your dog’s intelligence. So why not teach your pup new tricks?

In today’s content, you will learn how to train your dog to roll over! Prepare the treats and check out the tips below to help make training your pup easier:

How to train a dog to roll over?

Many don’t realize it, but the “Roll Over” is an easy trick to teach your dog. It just takes patience, persistence, and dedication. The movement is simple. But it is necessary to encourage your dog to repeat it, so that he can absorb the command. Check out the step-by-step guide below to teach your dog to roll over:

Step 1

First, you should ask your dog to lie down in front of you. If he heeds the command, he will surely learn to roll easily. If he doesn’t know how to perform the trick, you’ll have to teach him before moving on to the next step.

Step 2

This next step comes only after your dog already responds to your command to lie down. Your dog should be on his stomach, paws stretched out in front of his body and head up. This is the ideal position to start with.

Once your dog is in this position, show him the treat and say the command “roll over” clearly. Rotate the treat around your dog’s head so his muzzle can follow along. Guide your dog with the treat so that he rolls over on the floor.

Step 3

Reward your pup when he rolls over on the floor. Remember to only deliver the treat when he lies down and rolls over, as this will be the reward for him having managed to reproduce the expected movement.

Step 4

Even if it seems tiresome, you should repeat the training until your dog no longer needs treats to roll over. Repetition is key for your dog to learn new behaviors and tricks.

Once he learns to roll, you can perform the training in different locations and more distracting environments, such as outdoors. It’s sure to be a really fun time for you and your dog!

Why is it important to teach your dog commands?

Teaching commands to dogs is not as simple a task as it seems. Some tricks are actually easier than others, however, it takes patience and a lot of dedication to get satisfactory results.

Dogs, just like humans, learn through repetition. Therefore, you must carry out daily training sessions until your dog is able to naturally perform everything that has been taught.

Training, in addition to stimulating your dog’s memory, helps to reduce anxiety and stress. Dogs that learn tricks and are stimulated daily become more obedient and develop good behaviors.

If you’ve never taught your dog any tricks, why not start doing it today? This will definitely do your furry friend a lot of good.
